Abstract
The purpose of this research is to study the activities of daily living(ADL) and economic difficulties, the two main factors influencing the mental health of rural elderly, and establish the mediated effects of social support. Based on these result, we will provide the fundamental materials which can be used as the basis for developing welfare policies and programs for the rural elderly to lead a healthy life. For this purpose, we surveyed 180 elderly people that frequent the senior citizen center of a super high-aged district, where 28.5 percent of the residents are elderly people. study result shows that economic difficulties as well as difficulties over daily activities do influence the mental health in their aged lives in rural areas, and that when this happens, social support plays the part of mediated behavior. The policy proposals that we recommend include developing policies of mental health programs for elderly in rural areas, psychological healing (treatment) designed to relieve such symptoms, education to prevent depression and suicide, and a reinforced network to prevent them from being isolated.
